Welcome!
I'm Carrie Ahr, a Vitalist Herbalism practitioner, forager, birth-worker, and homesteader. I'm ever a student of life and how to support it, and am offering to help others on this path through plant walks, classes, and personal wellness consultations.
My interests are diverse, yet all rooted in discovering ways to help people, animals, plants (and even fungi and microbes) to live their lives in wellness and balance. I am able to see clients both online and in person, for acute and chronic issues related to the mind, body and spirit. I can help you find organic or wild crafted herbs and formulations for your herbal needs.
What is Herbalism?
Herbalism is "the art and science of using plants to support health and wellness" (American Herbalists Guild, 2022)
What is Vitalist Herbalism?
“Vitalism is founded on the idea that the living body is intrinsically different from the cadaver, most notably in the presence of a life force that animates it. This vital force imbues the body with life and possesses an innate intelligence that maintains the organism’s proper functioning and self-organization. According to vitalist traditions, if the body is sick, we can rely upon it, in some measure, to heal itself; accordingly, we work with this life force to restore the organism to health. A universal principle among vitalist traditions is that medicines are used to support the body’s innate, self-regulating healing power. This is in contrast to the mechanistic model of medicine, which treats the body as a machine: if part isn’t functioning correctly, we can either fix it or take it out and replace it.”—Sarah Popham, The School of Evolutionary Herbalism

"Vitalism is not just a philosophy, but a strategy…Hippocrates called this “the healing power of Nature”. Nature is much more multidimensional than just a force. Nature is a force with intelligence. A force with transcendent wisdom. A force with pattern and a design beyond our comprehension." —Paul Bergner, Director of NAIMH (North American Institute of Medical Herbalism)
